The Impact of Peer Support on Reintegrating Veterans with Mental Illness

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to examine the implementation of a peer support program in a medical center in northeastern United States. Peer support is a new intervention being offered to veterans to help with the transition to civilian life in the midst of having mental health and substance use issues. Peer support documentation was evaluated using the peer support handbook of the medical center, which detailed service guidelines. The findings concluded that guidelines were inconsistently met and depended more on the specialist conducting the treatment that the guidelines proposed in the handbook.
