Effect of Academic Major on Sleep Among Undergraduate Students

This presentation will present the research findings of a study that examined factors that affect sleep quality and quantity among undergraduate students. Previous research is equivocal in determining the relationship between stress, age, class year, gender, academic major and sleep quality and quantity. There is paucity of research on the connection between academic major and sleep quality and quantity of college students. The study used the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index to survey undergraduate students (N=70) to uncover relationships between academic school of major and sleep quality and quantity. The participants were students at Ithaca College across four different schools of major. Data was analyzed using SPSS to run descriptive statistics and a multiple linear regression. Results indicated no connection between school of major and sleep quality and quantity. However, stress was found to be a significant predictor of sleep quality.
