Description

Today, both teacher and student face a myriad of challenges related to education. Students are asked to learn more and more information each year to help prepare them for the increasingly competitive job market while their teachers are being asked to instruct an increasingly diverse student population. This report focuses on data collected from 16 at risk learners enrolled in an alternative education setting and the impact of a problem based learning example on their attitudes about science education. Most of the students had been removed from the traditional academic setting due to poor academic performance, behavior difficulties, anxiety issues, or some combination of these factors. This study identified changes in student attitudes towards science. While this may have been the result of the actual problem based learning example, attitudinal changes may be the result of smaller classes within the facility, a much lower student to teacher ratio. Additional research on the impact of problem based learning examples on student attitudes towards science within more controlled student populations may be helpful to address the impact of PBL on specific at risk student populations.
