Recreational Reading and the Common Core

Elizabeth VanHouter, Alfred University

Description

In this research I strive to answer the question: How has the implementation of the Common Core affected recreational reading as indicated by public library loan rates? I suspect that the volume that students read, as well as the content students choose to read has been affected by the new practices associated with the implementation of the common core in classrooms. I will use teacher, student, and librarian surveys; paired with library loan figures; to collect data on this topic and examine the correlation between library loans as an indicator of recreational reading and implementation of the common core. I believe the information that I collect will show that the impact of the Common Core on students’ literacy development extends beyond the classroom.
