What Do Kids Think?

Jordan E. McClammy, Alfred University

Description

Measuring a child’s creativity can be a daunting, almost impossible task. What do actually kids think about? This survey examines how reading impacts students' creation of visual imagery. This project hypothesizes that fiction and non- fiction reading greatly impacts children's sensory experiences. It works to determine how these experiences influence their visual creativity through use of student surveys, reading and drawing experiments, and artist statements discussing the child’s reasoning behind the artwork. The project focuses on students from grades 3-5. Each group of students will listen to 3 non-fiction readings and 3 fiction readings. They will be asked to listen to the passage once and then again while drawing. Students will be given a survey afterwards that will ask them why the drew what they did and then to create a statement about each piece. The goal of the research is to demonstrate that children’s literacy greatly impacts creativity in the visual arts.
