Visualization for Stress Reduction

Peter Fox, The College at Brockport

Description

The purpose of the study is to determine whether a brief guided visualization can reduce long-term stress in clinical mental health practitioners. A 10-minute guided visualization and a 1-minute guided visualization were both delivered to practitioners once per week over the eight week intervention period. The Perceived Stress Scale (PSS) was completed by participants once per week for a three week baseline measurement period and then once per week for the eight week intervention period. Participants include 10 mental health practitioners from a busy Western New York mental health clinic that serves a diverse, high-need clientele. It was found that over the eight week intervention period practitioner stress levels were reduced by a significant amount as measured by the PSS.
