Impact of STEM Instruction on Literacy Achievement

Bryan Lewis, Alfred University

Description

STEM curriculum— a very student centered curriculum with instruction based more on student discovery than teacher lecture—has in recent years become widely integrated for instruction in a variety of content areas. Some research has shown that this type of instruction has led to increased achievement in many core areas, specifically Literacy. The purpose of this research project is to examine the relationship between the socio-economic background of a school community and the impact of STEM instruction on Literacy achievement within those schools. This research will match school districts by population, number of years of STEM instruction, and socio-economic background. Ultimately, the goal of this research is to offer more concrete evidence of how effective STEM instruction is in different school environments allowing schools to select the types of curriculum best suited for their students.
