Collected here are documents that showcase something of the life and work of Mary Jane Holmes. Mrs. Holmes was a Brockport resident and an extraordinarily popular novelist from the 1860s until the turn of the century. Her novels include titles like "Tempest and Sunshine," "Cousin Maude," Rose Mather" and many more. Her books generally feature a female protagonist, and while written in a style and sensibility that may seem old fashioned today, she spoke of many of the issues and concerns faced by women of her day. She died in 1907, but her books are still read by some today. They are widely available in larger libraries, used book sites, and Google books.
