History of early education in Niagara County, the early academies and one room schools, teachers and teaching.

Publication Date

Schools Niagara County NY, Lewiston Academy, Wilson Collegiate Institute, Royalton Centre Academy, Belva Lockwood, Henry O. Sibley

An excellent student paper done in 1962 for a class on the Folklore of the Empire State. She seems to have been a Niagara County native and to have had access to old timers for their reminiscences. Her research carefully covers the early one room schools, the teachers and their teaching, as well as the several academies that flourished in that area in the 19th century. There are several photographs of then surviving old one room schools.

Not only good local history, but much it captures what would have taken place in many parts of the state and country. Today's College at Brockport was once a small academy much like those she captures so well.

Off to school in the past century: a story of early education in Niagara County and the Town of Royalton
